Mom’s Brisket

chefphil1

I remember having my Mom’s brisket recipe as a child. My Mom handed this recipe down to me and there is no room for improvement. With the sweet tanginess from the ketchup and the saltiness from the soy sauce-it is truly a dish that will have people remembering your backyard BBQ.

Difficulty: Beginner Preparation Time: 10min

Yields: 4 Servings Total Time: 3hr 30min

Ingredients:

  • 2lb brisket, at room temperature

  • 1 cup canola oil

  • 2/3 cup ketchup

  • 2/3 cup soy sauce

  • 4 Tbs white vinegar

  • 4 Tbs sugar

  • ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper

  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped

Procedure:

FOR THE BRISKET

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place rack in middle of oven. In a blender, mix the first 7 ingredients until pureed. Place about ½ cup of cooking sauce in a 9x9x13 glass baking dish. Put brisket on top of sauce, and pour remaining sauce over. Cover with foil and bake until meat is very tender, about 2 ½ to 3 hours.

Let cool for 10-15 minutes, then slice into ¼ inch thick pieces across the grain of the meat. You can pour some of the braising liquid onto the meat after slicing, if you wish.
